Poppy Seed Bread with Orange Glaze

This delicious bread recipe is from a restaurant in Salem, IN called Christie’s on the Square.  When my mom visits every spring she usually makes a special trip with her friends to eat there!  They all love the poppy seed bread so much they bought me this cookbook so I could make it at home.  I must say, it is a wonderful bread – for dessert or even breakfast.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 TBS poppy seeds
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp butter flavoring

Glaze:

  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 1/2 tsp butter flavoring

(I did adjust a few measurements very slightly from their original recipe)

Divide batter evenly between loaf pans.  Bake for 1 hour – 1 hour 15 minutes.  Check after 1 hour, mine took a bit longer.IMG_4719

While loaves are baking prepare the glaze.  Combine all the ingredients and mix with a wire wisk.  Heat in the microwave for 15 seconds to dissolve sugar.  Set aside until bread is done baking.  Heat in microwave again and pour over hot bread just out of the oven. IMG_4723Optionally, if you want to let the glaze soak into the bread even more so, poke the bread with a fork or knife in various places before pouring glaze overtop.  IMG_4724 IMG_4725 IMG_4727 IMG_4728 IMG_4729 IMG_4730
